| On a very dark and hazy moonless night a pair of Phantoms were flying a coastal reconnaissance flight when one of the crew spotted truck lights on a road near Long Chau, 30 miles northeast of Thanh Hoa. The leading aircraft dropped flares but they failed to ignite, and a minute later the leader saw a huge flash on the ground, which was presumed to be Lt Thompson’s aircraft (call sign Black Lion 102) crashing and exploding. There was no sign of any anti-aircraft fire so it was assumed that Lt Thompson had become disorientated over unlit terrain on a dark night and flew into the ground. |
