| During a night armed reconnaissance mission a section of A-4s found several barges on the Song Yen river near Hoang Xa, 10 miles south of Thanh Hoa. The Skyhawks overflew the barges to drop flares to illuminate the target. Lt Hogan (call sign Montana 415) dived at the barges and dropped his bombs but the wingman then saw another flash followed by a fire on the ground. It was assumed that Lt Hogan had struck the ground having misjudged the distance required to pull out of his dive due to the uneven light of the flares. |
