| Most Iron Hand flights consisted of one or two F-105F Wild Weasels and two or three F-105D bombers, which completed the destruction started by the Weasel’s Shrike missiles. An F-105D (call sign Clipper) in an Iron Hand flight was hit by AAA near Pho Son, 20 miles southwest of Mu Ron Ma, as the flight was en route to a target. Capt Vizcarra headed south towards the DMZ but after about 20 miles he was forced to eject. He was rescued by a US Navy helicopter after spending two hours on the ground. Capt Vizcarra had served on two previous temporary deployments to Thailand and had taken part in the USAF’s first attack on a SAM site on 27 July 1965 when six of his colleagues were shot down. He later returned to Southeast Asia and flew 120 missions in the F-100 with the 35th TFW at Phan Rang and retired in 1984 to join Northrop Corporation. |
