| A flight of four Thunderchiefs was assigned to bomb a railway and road bridge near Bac Ninh, 15 miles northeast of Hanoi. Capt Ammon’s aircraft (call sign Wildcat 1), leading the flight, was hit by AAA and caught fire just before reaching the bridge. He was heard to say that he was ejecting and other members of the flight saw his parachute descend to the ground and heard a short transmission from Ammon’s SAR beeper. Nothing more was heard from or about Capt Ammon during the war. In August 1978 a congressional delegation led by Representative G V Montgomery visited Hanoi to open talks about the POW/MIA issue. As a token of good faith the Vietnamese handed over several sets of remains of US servicemen, one of those sets was later identified as being those of Capt Ammon. It is still not known how or when he had met his death. |
