| Capt Wilfred Keese Abbott (USAF) (POW) |
| A section of Crusaders from the Oriskany was jumped by MiG-17s that suddenly emerged from cloud near Ninh Binh. Both Crusaders were damaged by cannon fire, one of them (call sign Old Nick 106) fatally, as it tried to turn inside the MiG. The North Vietnamese must have been somewhat confused when they captured the Crusader pilot because Capt Abbott was a USAF pilot on exchange with the Navy. Capt Abbott’s right leg was broken when he ejected and although the North Vietnamese eventually operated on the injury it took over two years for it to heal properly. Capt Abbott was released from captivity on 4 March 1973. |
