Capt B L Waltz (Survived) |
Capt Waltz was flying a Yankee Team photo-reconnaissance mission near Ban Senphan in southern Laos at 3,000 feet when his aircraft was hit by 37mm anti-aircraft fire. The Voodoo caught fire and Capt Waltz ejected near Ban Kouantan but was picked up, albeit badly injured, within an hour by an Air America UH-34 helicopter that happened to be in the vicinity. This particular aircraft was the penultimate RF-101C of 166 built between 1958 and March 1959. Following the loss of this aircraft and the F-100 three days earlier, the theatre commanders wanted to make a major strike on targets in the Mu Gia Pass in the hope that it would force the North Vietnamese to stop using the area for the movement of supplies to South Vietnam. However, permission was denied by Washington as it did not wish to escalate the war further at this stage. |
