Military Unit: VF-162

Home Base: USS Oriskany
Name(s):
Lt Terry Arden Dennison (KIA)

Although several aircraft had been hit and two brought down by ground fire while attacking SAM sites, no US aircraft had been confirmed lost to an SA-2 since 24 April. However, on 19 July this run of good luck came to an end during a Navy strike on the Co Trai Bridge. The bridge was an important crossing point south of Hanoi and was well defended by AAA and SAM sites. As the strike force was leaving the target area one of the Crusaders (call sign Super Heat 210) providing CAP was seen to be hit by one of the 13 SA-2s that were fired during the raid. The aircraft was flying at around 12,000 feet and burst into flames and broke up immediately. No parachute was observed or SAR beeper heard. The aircraft crashed near Hoang Xa, 18 miles south of Hanoi. Lt Dennison’s remains were handed over by the Vietnamese government in 1974 and it is believed that he had died in a POW camp.
