Cdr Charles Henry Peters (KIA)

Strikes against POL targets in North Vietnam continued into July. During a raid on a POL site at Dong Nham near Dong San, 20 miles northeast of Haiphong, the Skyhawk (call sign Silver Fox 511) of the commanding officer of VA-155 was hit in the starboard wing by 37mm AAA as it exited the target area. The aircraft began to stream fuel and caught fire but Cdr Peters radioed that as he could still maintain control he would try to reach the coast. Just as it crossed the beach near the island of Dao Ma Mun the fire suddenly worsened and the aircraft snap rolled. Cdr Peters ejected at low level and landed in the sea but was not seen to surface. It was assumed that he had been injured during the ejection and had drowned. At Dong Nham seven fuel tanks and four support buildings were destroyed during this raid. In 1988 the Vietnamese government handed over human remains that were positively identified as being those of Cdr Peters.
