| The RA-3Bs and EA-3Bs of VAP-61 made regular deployments to South Vietnam or to one of the TF 77 carriers. These Skywarrior variants were used to gather photographic or electronic intelligence on the enemy. The RA-3B was used particularly for night reconnaissance work over the Ho Chi Minh Trail using both conventional and infra-red cameras. Some of the aircraft were camouflaged to reduce their visibility at night. On 13 June an RA-3B (call sign Quiz Show 907), temporarily operating from the USS Hancock, was shot down on a low level night photographic sortie over North Vietnam. The crew of an escorting aircraft saw a bright flash over the mouth of the Gia Hoi River 20 miles up the coast from Mu Ron Ma. It was assumed that the aircraft had been shot down by ground fire. No trace of the aircraft or crew was ever found. |
