| A Skyraider (call sign Dragonfly 23) was hit by anti-aircraft fire on its second dive on a vehicle on one of the many routes that made up the Ho Chi Minh Trail in southern Laos. Capt Smith realised that the Vietnamese coast was closer than his base at Udorn and set off towards the east. However, he was forced to abandon his badly damaged aircraft soon after crossing into North Vietnam and landed about 25 miles southwest of Dong Hoi. He was later rescued by a HH-3C from Udorn. |
