| Two Skyraiders aircraft were shot down by .50 calibre gunfire as they were defending a government outpost at night near Ap Vinh Tho, south of the Mekong Delta. The aircraft were silhouetted by flares when making low-level napalm attacks on Viet Cong forces. US Army helicopters from the 57th Medical Detachment arrived at the scene and rescued Capt May and one of the VNAF student pilots, but the other survivor was captured. Following this incident the use of napalm in night support missions was discontinued for some time. |
