The eighth RF-101 (call sign Arrow 22) lost in Southeast Asia since the beginning of the year was shot down 15 miles southwest of Yen Bai and 65 miles northwest of Hanoi, possibly while heading towards Thai Nguyen to take post-strike photographs of the F-105 raid on the railway yards. Maj Runyan was taken prisoner and released during Operation Homecoming on 12 February 1973. Commissioned in 1951, he had flown 100 combat missions during the Korean War and was on his 88th mission in Vietnam when he was shot down. He retired from the USAF as a Colonel in 1974. |
