Lt Cdr William Patrick Egan (KIA) |
While on a Steel Tiger road reconnaissance mission in southern Laos Lt Cdr Egan’s Skyraider (call sign Barn Owl 567) was shot down by small arms fire near Ban Senphan as it was diving on a vehicle. His wingman searched the area but saw no sign that Lt Cdr Egan had survived the crash. Although pieces of the Skyraider were recovered from the crash site during Joint US/Laotian investigations in the 1990s it was not until 2009 that a Laotian farmer found bone fragments close to the crash site and handed them in. Mitochondrial testing and matching with a family member subsequently proved that these were the remains of Lt Cdr Egan. |
