As a section of Intruders was flying an armed reconnaissance mission along the coast of North Vietnam near Mu Ron Ma one of the aircraft (call sign Buckeye 814) was hit in the starboard wing by 37mm anti-aircraft fire. The hydraulics failed and a fire burned continuously as the aircraft limped over 125 miles towards the carrier. As the aircraft was uncontrollable below 250 knots and the fire had almost burnt through the wing the crew ejected over the sea some 35 miles northeast of Hué. Both crewmen were picked up safely by a USAF Albatross amphibian.
