Cdr John Clement Mape (KIA)

A section of Skyraiders from VA-52 on an armed reconnaissance mission was preparing to attack a small wooden bridge that had been spotted during an earlier flight. As the aircraft were flying at 7,500 feet near Giao Phuong 15 miles southwest of Vinh, an SA-2 missile was launched, which destroyed one of the Skyraiders. The aircraft (call sign Viceroy 381) was flown by Cdr Mape, who had been the CO of VA-52 since 10 December 1965. JTF-FA investigators visited the crash site several times in the early 1990s but did not find any remains. However, in 1994 the investigators learned that a number of Vietnamese men had been arrested two years earlier for illegally excavating the crash site and removing human remains. Vietnamese authorities confiscated the remains and handed them over to the JTF-FA team. The remains were later positively identified as being those of Cdr Mape.
