The day after the Ubon Phantom was shot down near Dien Bien Phu the Takhli Wing sent several F-105s to fly armed reconnaissance in the area. One of the aircraft (call sign Mercury), flown by Maj Underwood, was hit by 37mm AAA two miles east of the town just after releasing its bombs on a target. The aircraft caught fire and eventually crashed about 5 miles northwest of Dien Bien Phu. In 1996, acting upon information provided by local villagers, a joint US-Vietnamese investigation team excavated a crash site and discovered human remains, identification tags and personal effects. The remains were later identified as those of Maj (since promoted to Colonel) Underwood and returned to the USA for burial.
