Maj Oscar Mauterer (POW (died)) |
During an escort mission for an O-1E FAC near Ban Senphan, south of the Mu Gia Pass, a USAF Skyraider (call sign Sandy 22) was hit by ground fire and burst into flames. Maj Mauterer was seen to eject and, once on the ground, spoke to other pilots but was then thought to have been captured either by the North Vietnamese or the Pathet Lao. A SAR helicopter arrived but found no sign of the downed pilot. Maj Mauterer’s name was mentioned by a Laotian official in a September 1968 statement as being a POW along with several other US airmen. Oscar Mauterer was not released alive from Laos but on 30 April 1994 the symbol on the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington was changed from a cross to a star indicating that information or remains had been received that proved his death. However, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency is still carrying Maj Mauterer as unaccounted for as of August 2019. |
