Date: 10 February 1966
Aircraft type: B-57B Canberra
Serial Number: 52-1575
Military Unit: 13 TBS, 405 FW attached to 6252 TFW
Service: USAF
Home Base: Da Nang
Name(s):
Capt Russell Palmer Hunter (KIA)
Capt Ernest Philip Kiefel (KIA)

The Canberra squadron at Da Nang was now spending much of its time on night missions over the Ho Chi Minh Trail in the Steel Tiger area of southern Laos. The aircraft’s good endurance, weapons capacity and stability made it suitable for this particular mission although it lacked the advanced avionics necessary for night work. Capt Hunter was working with a C-130 flareship and reported attacking a target near Ban Vangthon. After making a second pass he reported problems with the aircraft, presumably as the result of ground fire, and that he and his navigator were ejecting. A flash was seen on the ground and later the wreckage was found but there was no trace of the crew.
