The aircraft’s hydraulic system was badly damaged but Lt Klumpp (call sign Linfield 402) maintained control and flew back to his carrier. As the flaps were extended during the approach to land the aircraft began to roll uncontrollably and the crew ejected. They were both picked up safely by the carrier’s plane guard helicopter, a UH-2 Seasprite of HC-1 Detachment 1, Unit C. Fritz Klumpp was on his 30th mission and went on to complete 106 more by the end of May.
