| A VC troop concentration near Phu Cuong, 10 miles north of Saigon, was the target for a section of Skyraiders from the Ticonderoga. On his ninth strafing pass, Lt Donahue’s aircraft (call sign Viceroy 387) was hit in the fuselage by automatic weapon fire setting his aircraft alight. He coaxed the aircraft about 10 miles away from the enemy concentration before having to crash-land. Luckily, he was rescued unharmed by a US Army helicopter before the VC could reach him. This aircraft was the last of 72 AD-7s (later redesignated A-1Js) built and therefore the final Skyraider to be constructed. |
