| On 15 December the USAF bombed the Uong Bi thermal power plant, 12 miles northeast of Haiphong. This was the largest power plant to be bombed so far and was the first major industrial target to be bombed in North Vietnam. During the raid Capt Dewitt’s aircraft (call sign Dodge) was hit by 37mm flak and a few minutes later the controls froze forcing him to eject over the sea. He was picked up safely by an HU-16 amphibian that was fired at continuously by shore batteries as it made the pick up. Capt Dewitt suffered a broken leg during his ejection and was medevaced to the USA for recovery. He had previously flown the RF-101 with a reconnaissance squadron in France. |
