VMFA-323 was the fifth Marine Corps Phantom squadron to rotate into Da Nang, having arrived on 1 December. A week later Maj Dunn, the executive officer of VMFA-323, and CWO Frederick were escorting an EF-10B Skyknight on a night ECM mission over North Vietnam when they were shot down about 45 miles west of Thanh Hoa. The loss was attributed to either an SA-2 missile or possibly a MiG, however MiG activity was minimal at this time and there is no evidence that the North Vietnamese had the all-weather MiG-17PF version in service at this time. Maj Dunn ejected safely and evaded capture for six days before he was found. He was imprisoned in seven different camps until release on 12 February 1973. CWO John Frederick was also captured and survived torture and mistreatment for seven years only to die of typhoid on 19 July 1972. On 13 March 1974 the North Vietnamese handed over the remains of several individuals which upon investigation were found to include those of CWO Frederick.
