| Tragedy struck the Ticonderoga on the 30th when it was conducting operations at Yankee Station about 60 miles northeast of Da Nang. The arrester hook of a VF-53 Crusader failed as it caught one of the ship’s wires when returning from a CAP mission. The aircraft went over the side and the pilot was killed. Another F-8 pilot from VF-53, Lt Richard W Hastings, was standing on the LSO platform at the time and was hit by flying debris from the aircraft and later died of his injuries. |
