| An Intruder was launched on a single-aircraft mission to the Thai Dinh transshipment point in North Vietnam on the night of the 19th. Just as the aircraft was about to cross the coast on its return to the Midway a single 12.7mm machine gun bullet penetrated the right side of the cockpit and hit the bombardier/navigator Lt Donnelly in the head. Lt McCormick flew the aircraft back to the carrier where Lt Donnelly was pronounced dead by a flight surgeon after being removed from the cockpit. Lt Donnelly’s body was returned to the USA and buried in his home town of Waterbury, CT. |
