| One of the Linebacker CAP flights that protected the B-52s was engaged by MiGs during a Linebacker strike. One of the Phantoms (call sign Vega 2) was shot down by an Atoll missile at low-level and Capt Anderson and 1Lt Ward ejected about 30 miles west of Hanoi. Not only was this the last USAF aircraft to be shot down by a MiG but it was also the only US aircraft lost in air-to-air combat at night during the war.
The crew ejected at high speed and at very low-level and Capt Anderson broke both his arms during the ejection and was released early on 12 February while 1Lt Ward, although also injured, was repatriated on 29 March 1973. |
