| The last Phantom lost by VMFA-232 was shot down during a two-aircraft strike on a target in southern Laos on 20 November. The aircraft (call sign Motion 5) was hit by AAA near Ban Tampanko, about 20 miles west of the A Shau Valley. The pilot ejected and was rescued by a USAF HH-53C helicopter from the 40th ARRS but the Radar Intercept Officer was probably unable to eject and did not survive. VMFA-232 had lost a total of five Phantoms and two crewmembers during its last two tours in Southeast Asia. The Squadron lost no further aircraft and left Nam Phong on 1 September 1973 for a two-month stay at Cubi Point before moving on to Iwakuni. |
