| Another Wolfpack Phantom was destroyed when it crashed while landing at Ubon after a combat mission. In the hope that North Vietnam would come to the negotiating table, President Nixon restricted Linebacker operations on 23 October. Bombing missions north of the 20th parallel were prohibited for the time being, although operations in the lower provinces of North Vietnam were still permitted. During the course of Linebacker I the USAF alone had flown 9,315 sorties over North Vietnam for the loss of 63 aircraft. The North Vietnamese had fired 2,750 SA-2 missiles during Linebacker I resulting in the loss of 46 aircraft, a kill rate of almost 60 missiles fired for each kill. In 1965 it only took an average of 18 SAMs to down an aircraft. |
