| Another Phantom (call sign Date) was lost during a chaff dropping mission in support of a Linebacker raid on storage caves at La Danh, 35 miles north of Hanoi. The chaff flight was engaged by MiG-21s which broke through the MiGCAP flight about 25 miles northeast of Haiphong before the target had been reached. Capt Zuberbuhler’s aircraft was hit by an Atoll missile and the crew had to ejected before they reached the coast. Both men were eventually captured and both were released on 29 March 1973. Capt Zuberbuhler was on his 368th mission of the war when he was shot down. The MiG that shot down this Phantom was later destroyed by a Sidewinder missile from an F-4E from the 388th TFW. Two more MiG-21s were shot down by USAF Phantoms during this engagement. |
