Two Phantoms were assigned to a Raven FAC who was working a target five miles east of the town of Ban Na Mai in the Plain of Jars. Capt R W Herold (call sign Raven 23) marked the target, an AAA site, for the Phantoms and Capt Wood (call sign Tufa 2) made two passes over the target, dropping Mk82 bombs. On the third pass the other Phantom crew saw Capt Wood’s aircraft burst into flames and crash near the village of Lat Sen. They also saw at least one parachute and then noticed that the Bird Dog FAC had also crashed. It was not known whether the FAC and the Phantom had collided or had both been shot down by the 12.7mm anti-aircraft gun site they were attacking at the time but a collision seems more likely. Two ejection seats were seen on the ground but there was no trace of any of the aircrew and no SAR beepers were heard. The remains of the three men have not yet been found.
