| A Crusader (call sign Nickel 102) was flying a mission over the border near the Mu Gia Pass when it was shot down by ground fire. Cdr Davis, the CO of VF-211, was strafing a storage area in a 45-degree dive when his aircraft was hit by 37mm flak on its second pass. A fire warning light came on in the cockpit and the hydraulic and flight control system began to fail. Cdr Davis ejected when the aircraft started to roll out of control and entered a flat spin. He was then protected by a constant stream of A-4s and F-8s that blasted any movement in the jungle near the downed pilot. Cdr Davis was rescued the following day by a HH-53C flown by Capt B D Orrell of the 40th ARRS. On 1 May 1967 this Crusader was being flown by Lt Cdr M Wright when he shot down a MiG-17. |
