Military Unit: VA-155
Service: USN
Home Base: USS Coral Sea
Name(s):
Lt Cdr Paul Michael Moore (Survived)

The Coral Sea suffered another aircraft loss during a strike on barracks near Lien Qui, 20 miles northeast of Thanh Hoa during an armed reconnaissance mission. A section of Skyhawks from VA-155 was assigned to Iron Hand defence suppression and Lt Cdr Moore was pulling out from his second attack with Zuni rockets when his aircraft (call sign Silver Fox 555) was hit by ground fire. The aircraft had been hit in the port side of the fuselage and the engine flamed out at 300 feet. Lt Cdr Moore quickly got his engine to relight but there was obviously some damage to the fuel system as it would not achieve anything like full power. He managed to limp south to a rendezvous with a KA-3B tanker which passed him some fuel but the engine continued to lose power. Realising that he could not reach the carrier, Lt Cdr Moore headed for the SAR destroyer and ejected close by.
