| An F-4E was lost on a fast FAC mission near the DMZ. Capt Murphy was the leading FAC pilot with the 13th TFS and had flown 54 Tiger FAC missions from his total of 124 combat missions with this Squadron before he was shot down. The aircraft (call sign Seafox) was damaged by ground fire and the crew ejected close to the shore near the northern edge of the DMZ buffer zone. Although 1Lt Johnston landed in the sea and was rescued by a Navy helicopter, Capt Murphy was not so fortunate and was captured on the beach and imprisoned. John Murphy started his flying career as a B-52 co-pilot before converting to the F-105 and flying 100 missions from Korat in 1968. He returned to Korat in October 1971 after a spell as a T-38 instructor pilot, and was shot down first on 10 February 1972 and then again near the end of his tour. Capt Murphy was released from captivity on 27 March 1973. |
