Two more Skyraiders (both with call sign Hobo) were downed within seconds of each other as they searched for Sandy 08 just south of Quang Tri. Maj Harding and Capt Screws were flying at 5,500 feet and 6,500 feet respectively when their aircraft were hit by SA-7s. Both missiles hit close to the aircraft’s engine, the source of heat to which they guided. The pilots ejected from the aircraft and were both picked up by Army helicopters although Capt Screws was badly injured. Maj Harding had played a major role in the successful rescue of Maj Clyde Smith (Bengal 505 Alpha) on 13 April and for which he was awarded the Air Force Cross.
