A North Vietnamese POL dump just below the DMZ and 17 miles west of Quang Tri was the target of a raid on the 14th. As one of a flight of three Phantoms dived on the target it was hit by 37mm flak and continued its dive until it crashed close to the target near the village of Cam Lo. The FAC pilot controlling the attack saw that the aircraft (call sign Linfield 203) had taken a hit in the cockpit and that neither of the crew had been able to escape. On 14 April 1985 the Vietnamese returned human remains said to belong to Lt McKinney. The Navy confirmed the identity in February 1988 although the McKinney family has disputed the claim. |
