| The commanding officer of VA-55 was leading a section of Skyhawks on a Steel Tiger strike on the 8th when his aircraft (call sign Garfish 502) was badly damaged by flak. He was making his sixth 45-degree dive bombing run when the aircraft was hit by AAA rupturing a fuel cell. Cdr Fenzl headed east towards Da Nang but he was forced to eject just 12 miles to the northwest of the city and was picked up by a USAF HH-53C helicopter from the 37th ARRS. |
