| VF-194 was unfortunate enough to lose another Crusader just five and a half hours after Lt Osborn’s death. After returning from a CAP mission a Crusader crashed when landing back on the carrier. The cause was put down to pilot fatigue and a badly pitching deck. Carrier landings are among the most demanding procedures in military aviation short of actual air combat. The aircraft has to be flown positively and precisely onto the deck and the pilot then has to go to full power in case the aircraft’s arrester hook should miss the wires. In poor visibility with a rolling and pitching deck even the most experienced naval aviator is put to the test. |
