| A Phantom was returning to the Ranger at about 4:00 am after a night BARCAP mission and was set up for a GCA landing. About a mile from the carrier the crew took over the approach and flew it visually. The aircraft touched down too far down the deck and missed the arrester wires. As the aircraft left the deck the crew ejected and witnesses saw two parachutes land in the sea. Lt Rinne, the pilot, was picked out of the water by one of the Ranger’s SH-3G Sea King helicopters. However, there was no sign of Lt Miller, who was presumed to have drowned or killed during the ejection. |
