| A pair of Marine Corps Phantoms was attacking an enemy position near An Hoa, 15 miles southwest of Da Nang, when one of the aircraft (call sign Love Bug 208) was shot down. The aircraft flew into a barrage of .50 calibre gunfire at 500 feet as it made a shallow dive on the target. The ground fire hit the cockpit area and 1Lt Wilbrecht may have been hit as he flew west, deeper into enemy held territory, rather than making for the coast to the east. The aircraft crashed about 15 miles from where it was hit and although the backseater ejected and was rescued by a USAF HH-3E helicopter from the 37th ARRS, 1Lt Wilbrecht died in the crash. |
