| Lt(jg) Joe Russell Mossman (KIA) |
| Lt Mossman was flying one of four Skyhawks that were on an armed reconnaissance mission just north of the DMZ. As the formation was about to attack a wooden bridge about 12 miles west of Dong Hoi, Lt Mossman’s aircraft (call sign Decoy 304) was hit by small arms fire and crashed. Mossman’s wingman spotted what he thought was a parachute near the Skyhawk’s wreckage and a SAR beeper was heard briefly. A SAR and surveillance mission was mounted but there was no sign of Lt Mossman. In October 1982 the Vietnamese turned over Mossman’s Navy ID card but, as yet, his remains have not been located. |
