| Jolly Green 27 of the 37th ARRS was attempting the rescue of downed airmen (possibly from a US Army UH-1) when it was shot down in South Vietnam. The pilot was killed outright and TSgt Hartzel and SSgt Davis were badly burned. As close air support kept the enemy troops away from the burning helicopter another HH-3E, flown by Maj Lewis Garrett and also of the 37th ARRS, rescued the three survivors and rushed the badly injured men to hospital. Sadly, TSgt Hartzel died of his injuries on 20 May and SSgt Davis died on 25 May as he was being flown to the USA to die at home as his burns were not survivable. |
