An RF-4C was damaged by AAA during a photo run at 4,500 feet over a segment of road in northern Laos while on a Barrel Roll mission. Despite major damage to the starboard wing, Maj Leaphart flew the aircraft (call sign Falcon) back to Udorn but he and his backseater were forced to eject as it went out of control during the approach to land. Unfortunately the aircraft crashed into the broadcasting building of the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service killing nine airmen. Both the crew of the Phantom suffered injuries during the ejection and landing. |
