| The Coral Sea was operating in the Gulf of Tonkin about 70 miles northeast of Dong Hoi on the 8th. Immediately after launching from the carrier on a ferry flight, Lt Pfaffmann reported a fire in the cockpit of his E-2 and that he was going to return to the ship. Unfortunately, the aircraft crashed about three miles ahead of the carrier and although a helicopter and a destroyer were at the scene within minutes, all five crew were lost. |
