Lt Hoffman’s aircraft was hit by shrapnel from a 37mm shell as he made his bombing run but he continued his dive and dropped his bombs before pulling out and heading away from the target. The wingman confirmed damage to the Corsair’s rear fuselage on the starboard side and after about 20 minutes the engine seized and the aircraft became uncontrollable. Lt Hoffman ejected close to the South Vietnamese border with Laos, about 50 miles west of Da Nang from where he was rescued by a US Army helicopter.
