| Two Super Sabres took off from Tuy Hoa on a night-time Combat Skyspot radar-controlled bombing mission near the DMZ. Capt Rosenbach lost his UHF transmitter after take off but could receive his leader and responded by clicking his microphone button. The mission proceeded as planned and the pair headed back towards their base. As they approached Tuy Hoa they started a wide circling approach to land. Capt Rosenbach was cleared to land first while his leader followed close behind. Capt Rosenbach’s aircraft was seen on radar as it overshot the runway and headed out to sea. About 10 miles northeast of the airfield Capt Rosenbach switched his IFF transponder to the emergency setting indicating that he had a problem. Moments later the aircraft disappeared from the radar screen and an extensive sea and air search was put into action. The search was terminated three days later with no sign of Capt Rosenbach or his aircraft. |
