| VA-196 lost an Intruder (call sign Milestone 516) during a Steel Tiger mission at dusk on the 6th. Lt Cdr Reese was attacking two trucks that had been found on a road near Ban Kapay, 30 miles west of the DMZ. The Intruder rolled in from 12,500 feet but as it passed through 7,000 feet the aircraft was hit by AAA and started to spiral to the right. The violent gyrations caused the port wing to disintegrate and the two crew ejected. The crew were rescued by a 40th ARRS HH-3E helicopter at first light the next day. |
