| Good, timely intelligence was crucial to the running of the air war in Southeast Asia and the unarmed photographic reconnaissance aircraft had a vital role to play, even if the cost was high. Lt Goodwin disappeared on a night reconnaissance mission over North Vietnam. His last reported position was over the Gulf of Tonkin just north of Dong Hoi and he radioed that he was in the middle of an intense thunderstorm. No trace of Lt Goodwin or his Crusader (call sign Cork Tip 992) was found at the time but a North Vietnamese militia unit claimed to have shot his aircraft down just off the coast. However, in December 2016 the DPAA received a box of human remains that had been found by a Vietnamese citizen. The remains were matched by dental and other evidence and in May 2017 were confirmed as being those of Lt Goodwin. |
