The Commando Sabre unit lost two aircraft on consecutive days on Steel Tiger missions in southern Laos thereby maintaining its unenviable record of the highest loss rate of any F-100 unit in Southeast Asia. The first Misty FAC aircraft was shot down as it circled its target at 1,000 feet near the village of Ban Tok, 45 miles southeast of Saravan. The aircraft (call sign Misty 30) was hit by 23mm AAA and 1Lt Merrill headed for Thailand. However, he and Capt Scott had to eject from their burning aircraft about 25 miles northwest of Saravan and were later rescued by a HH-3E from the 40th ARRS.
