| A pair of Phantoms was practising air combat manoeuvring against each other on a training flight over the sea off Da Nang. One of the aircraft (call sign Gunfighter 55) crashed when it started a manoeuvre at too low an altitude to pull out safely. The pilot was killed in the accident but the WSO was rescued by a HH-3E from the 37th ARRS. One source suggests that the two aircraft collided causing one of them to crash. |
