| A section of A-7s from the Coral Sea was sent on an armed reconnaissance mission over the Trail in southern Laos. The aircraft found trucks on a road near Ban Namm, some 30 miles west of the DMZ and commenced an attack. As Lt Cdr Hoff was pulling up from his fourth strafing pass on the trucks his aircraft (call sign Sidewinder 414) was hit by AAA and he reported that he had a fire warning light and was going to eject. He pulled up to 2,000 feet but then the aircraft rolled inverted and dived into the ground. No parachute was seen and it was presumed that the aircraft crashed before Lt Cdr Hoff was able to escape. |
