| A flight of F-105s attacked anti-aircraft gun positions near Ban Soppeng, possibly as a result of the loss of the 557 TFS Phantom on the previous day. Capt Hanley was pulling up from his second pass when his aircraft (call sign Cookie) was hit by ground fire. He headed east to try to reach the coast but the aircraft crashed a few miles short of the North Vietnamese border. Capt Hanley was presumed to have died in the incident. In 2012 the JPAC received human remains from an indigenous source via the Defense Intelligence Agency’s Stony Beach group which maintained a presence in Southeast Asia specifically to assist the accounting of missing service personnel after the war. Forensic analysis, including the use of mitochondrial DNA testing and dental matching, confirmed the remains as being those of Capt Hanley in 2013. |
